WILTSHIRE LIFE -February 2003
Rocked back on your haunches?
Long before I ever came to live and work in Salisbury, other than the Cathedral, the one place often spoken of was The Haunch of Venison and now it is up for sale. The building is said by the agents, Christie & Co of Winchester, to date from 1320 and is thought to be one of the oldest Taverns in England. It is a beautiful landmark, situated in Minster Street, in the heart of the city just across from Butchers Row. It is Grade 11 listed with 14th century origins and 16th century additions. Apparently, due to its age and atmosphere, the inn is regularly used for television filming and has had many celebrity guests. There are several enormous oak beams, thought to have originally been ships’ timbers, a fine period fireplace and an unusual pewter top bar. Not forgetting the two resident ghosts!
The property was formally called Church House and was supposed to have been connected to the church by a secret tunnel. The rear bar, now known as the “House of Lords”, was originally a meeting place for bishops and lords. The building has had something of a chequered history, especially when craftsmen were working on the Cathedral, as it was reputedly a brothel. It is also said that Churchill and Eisenhower used a small bar known as “The Horsebox” during the planning of the D-Day landings. The ghosts are of a Grey Lady and also the owner of the severed hand, which was found in a wall during refurbishment in the 19th century. It is said that this belonged to a whist player who was caught cheating at cards!
The bar and restaurant in the Haunch of Venison have always been very popular. The ideal cellar conditions make for an excellent pint, complemented by one of the finest selections of malts in the South of England. The Upper Restaurant has a most atmospheric dining room and of course venison is always served. The famous Haunch Platter consists of four venison dishes served with a complimentary glass of wine. Besides the bars and restaurant there is a manager’s flat on the second floor, whilst the third floor provides the owner’s accommodation. The Pub has been featured in the Good Pub Guide since its conception 20 years ago and also has the 25-year CAMRA award. Christie & Co are selling on behalf of the joint owners and offers in excess of £125,000 are sought for the remainder of the lease.
I was interested to see that following the Queen’s Speech the Government has resurrected the idea of “House Sellers Packs”. This would allow for a consultation process prior to a formal Bill being introduced later. Andrew Cronan of FPDSavills, expressed the view that, “Although we fully support the aim of speeding up and making more certain the process of house buying and selling, we hope that during the consultation period some significant changes will be made to the original Government proposals”.
